BOB THE BUILDER IDEAS:

Here's a cake that requires no tips or bags.  I've used a 9 x 13 inch pan 2 inches deep.

I cut a slice off one LONG side two inches wide.   This piece I cut in half, then cut the ends off at an angle, removing 1/4 of the piece on each end.  SEE DRAWING:

Frost the bottom rectangle of cake, place the 6 1/2" angled piece on each end and frost.   Place the handle on top of the end pieces and use the triangle pieces left to finish off the pointed end of the tool box.  You will have to remove extra cake to accommodate the dowel handle.   Place the candy tools on top of the base cake and WHALLA, cake is complete.

DOWEL ROD AND RED COLORING  (This small bottle of gel color will make two quarts of GOOD RED icing.  You will only need 1/2 the jar.)

SUPPLIES:

TULIP RED (NO TASTE) GEL COLOR                 $1.79

ONE DOWEL ROD HANDLE 10 3/4"                         .75

9 x 13 in. Wilton performance pan                               9.99

LARGE TOOLS MOD                                        1.65

                              Large tools mold

These molds are used clean and dry.  No spraying or greasing.  Melt white compound coating, add pinch of black powdered candy color for the silver part of the tools, paint in one color on the bi-colored molds, pour it into the single color molds.  Add a few chocolate bits to the white compound to get the wood color for the handles.  I've used yellow for the screwdriver, which was made the same way, adding yellow powdered candy color to the white compound.
When painting in a color, allow it to air dry before pouring in the second color so that the two colors won't flow together.  Place the mold in the refrigerator for 5 minutes or so, remove and turn upside down. (Put a piece of cardboard or something sturdy against it as you turn it over.)  The candy will fall out finished.   If it doesn't come out that easy it may need further cooling.

Small tools mold, black & yellow powder color

and white Merckens Compound Coating and

                                              4 chocolate bits

I painted in the helmet with just enough yellow that I couldn't see thru it, allowed it to air dry, mixed some Rice Krispies ® with the rest of it and filled the mold.  This makes the compound coating go further and it is much easier for the children to eat.  The finished product is something like a KitKat® Bar.
